✍️ English◷ 12 min★ 15 XP

BIG IDEA

Understand the idea before memorising a rule.

Comprehension and evidence is part of reading & comprehension. At Grade 7, the goal is to connect this topic to a clear method, relevant evidence and a final check. You will apply that idea to a real reading question at this grade level.

YOU WILL LEARN TO

  • Explain the key ideas in comprehension and evidence using accurate english vocabulary.
  • Apply a reliable method to a new comprehension and evidence task.
  • Check the result and explain why the evidence supports it.

METHOD

A reliable three-step approach

  1. 1

Read the complete text or sentence before deciding.

  2. 2

Point to the word, structure or quotation that supports the idea.

  3. 3

Explain the effect clearly and edit the final response.

WORKED EXAMPLE

During a class warm-up for Grade 7, a report lists evidence both for and against extending the school day. What is the writer's likely purpose?

Model response

The correct answer is To inform readers about both sides. Presenting evidence on both sides is an informative, balanced purpose.

KNOWLEDGE CHECK

During a peer-teaching task for Grade 7, the road was wet, umbrellas filled the pavement and water dripped from roofs. What can the reader infer?
