BIG IDEA
Understand the idea before memorising a rule.
Open files is part of tactics. At Grade 7, the goal is to connect this topic to a clear method, relevant evidence and a final check. You will apply that idea to a real tactics question at this grade level.
YOU WILL LEARN TO
- Explain the key ideas in open files using accurate chess vocabulary.
- Apply a reliable method to a new open files task.
- Check the result and explain why the evidence supports it.
METHOD
A reliable three-step approach
- 1
Check forcing moves: checks, captures and threats.
- 2
Compare at least two candidate moves.
- 3
Before moving, check the opponent's best reply.
WORKED EXAMPLE
During a revision card for Grade 7, what is a pin?
Model response
The correct answer is An attacked piece cannot safely move because something more valuable is behind it. Moving a pinned piece would expose a more valuable piece, often the king.
